MARRIAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR AN ELOPEMENT TO HAWAII

In addition to being a world-famous hot spot for destination weddings and honeymoons, the stunning Islands of Hawaii also have a reputation for easy-to-arrange elopements. There is no waiting period and marriage licenses are extremely easy to process,  making any of the main islands a perfect location for a luxury elopement. Peruse the legal* requirements below and see if eloping within the U.S. is perfect for you. 
 

Basic Marriage Requirements for Hawaii

  • The marriage license must be obtained within the islands of Hawaii

  • The bride and groom must be 18 years of age or older to marry without the written consent of both parents or legal guardian and the written approval of a family court judge

  • The marriage ceremony must be conducted by a marriage performer commissioned by the State of Hawaii Department of Health

 

Getting a Marriage License in Hawaii

The first step towards a legal marriage in Hawaii is to complete the online marriage license application or download and print the form to complete before submitting it in person to a marriage license agent. (Applications submitted by mail or email will not be accepted or processed.) You’ll then make an appointment with an authorized marriage license agent, and appear together in person (no proxies) with a cash payment ($80) and the documents below.

 

Required U.S. Documents

  • Valid state I.D. or driver’s license for applicants 19 years of age or over or certified copies of birth certificates for applicants under the age of 18

  • Decree Absolute(s)/Annulment Decree(s) in the case of dissolution of previous marriage(s)

  • Death certificate(s) in the case of widow- or widowerhood

 

Many hotels and resorts have marriage license agents on-site, making the process extremely easy to complete. The Hawaii District Health Offices issue licenses as well, and once a license is obtained, it is valid throughout the state of Hawaii for 30 days.
